Dr Peter Benjamin is the general manager of Cell-Life, a not-for-profit
developing technical systems for the HIV/AIDS sector, particularly
cellphones for mass communication. Cell-Life is running projects to use
various mobile technologies to support mass prevention messaging,
provide information to people infected or affected by HIV, link patients
to clinics, offer counselling and monitoring & evaluation.
He has worked on social uses of Information and Communication Technology
for 20 years. Originally from England, since 1994 he has lived in SA,
working with the Universal Service Agency, the Department of
Communications, the Open Knowledge Network Africa, and he founded the
LINK Centre at Wits University. He has written numerous articles on
universal access to ICTs and telecentres. He has BSc in Physics,
Masters in IT and a PhD examining telecentres; and is a member of the
Treatment Action Campaign.
